    Ms Aubin is the recipient of the 2018 Order of the White Rose, a $30,000 scholarship awarded annually to a Canadian woman engineering undergraduate. She was also awarded an NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship for 2018-2019, a Trottier Institute Scholarship for 2018-2020, and an FRQNT scholarship for 2019-2020.

  • Mathieu Besançon (PhD in Engineering Mathematics and Computer Science, Polytechnique Montreal &
    INRIA Lille, 2020)
    Thesis title: Bilevel models for Demand Response in Smart Grids. After graduating, Dr. Besançon was hired as a postdoctoral researcher at the Zuse Institute Berlin.

  • Mathieu Tanneau (PhD in Engineering Mathematics, Polytechnique Montreal, 2020)
    Thesis title: Exploiting Structure in Mixed-Integer Linear and Nonlinear Programming. Mr Tanneau was awarded a highly competitive Merit Scholarship for Foreign Students (PBEEE) by the FRQNT for 2018-2021 and an Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) Full Scholarship to attend the ESA 27th Annual Conference and Expo 2017. After graduating, Dr Tanneau was hired as a postdoctoral researcher at Georgia Institute of Technology.

  • Neda Etebari Alamdari (PhD in Engineering Mathematics, Polytechnique Montreal, 2019)
    Thesis title: A Data-Driven Approach in Revenue Management Problem with Behavioral Considerations. Dr Etebari Alamdari was awarded a BMP Innovation Scholarship for 2015-2017, funded by NSERC and FRQNT with industrial partner ExPretio Technologies Inc. After graduating, she was hired as a Data Scientist by IVADO Labs.

  • Michael David De Souza Dutra (PhD in Engineering Mathematics, Polytechnique Montreal, 2019)
    Thesis title: Demand Response for Smart Homes. Dr De Souza Dutra was supported by a Ciência sem Fronteiras scholarship. After graduating, he was hired as an Operations Researcher by Kronos Incorporated.

  • Christian Bingane (PhD in Engineering Mathematics, Polytechnique Montreal, 2019)
    Thesis title: Application de l'optimisation conique au problème d'écoulement de puissance optimal. Dr Bingane won first prize in the 2019 CORS Student Paper Competition, and his thesis was the Best Doctoral Thesis in Engineering Mathematics for 2019 at Polytechnique Montreal. He is currently a lecturer at Polytechnique Montreal.
  • Thibault Barbier (PhD in Engineering Mathematics, Polytechnique Montreal, 2018)

    Thesis title: Optimization and Simulation for Behavioural Revenue Management. Dr Barbier was awarded a BMP Innovation Scholarship jointly by NSERC and FRQNT for 2014-2017 with ExPretio Technologies Inc. as the industrial partner. He is now a Senior Scientist at ExPretio Technologies Inc.

  • Jesús Andrés Rodríguez Sarasty (PhD in Engineering Mathematics, Polytechnique Montreal, 2018)

    Thesis title: Mixed-Integer Programming Approaches for Generator Maintenance Scheduling in Hydropower Systems. Dr Rodríguez Sarasty was awarded a Mitacs Accelerate Internship for 2016-2017, in partnership with Rio Tinto. He is pursuing postdoctoral research at HEC Montreal.  

  • Vilmar Jefté Rodrigues de Sousa (PhD in Engineering Mathematics, Polytechnique Montreal, 2018)

    Thesis title: Global Optimization of the Max-k-Cut Problem. After graduating, Dr Rodrigues de Sousa pursued postdoctoral research at Polytechnique Montreal.

  • Juan Alejandro Gómez Herrera (PhD in Industrial Engineering, Polytechnique Montreal, 2017)

    Thesis title: User-oriented demand response for smart buildings. Dr Gómez Herrera is now a research associate at Polytechnique Montreal.

  • Adham Ismail (PhD in Industrial Engineering, Polytechnique Montreal, 2016)

    Thesis title: Lissage optimal de la charge électrique en présence de sources d’énergies renouvelables via le pilotage de la consommation des chauffe-eau. Dr Ismail is now Technical Lead (Operations Research) at Kronos Inc.

  • Patricia L. Gillett (PhD in Engineering Mathematics, Polytechnique Montreal, 2016).

    Thesis title: Semidefinite Programming Approaches and Software Tools for Quadratic Programs with Linear Complementarity Constraints.

    Dr Gillett is now a Senior Data Scientist at Shopify.

  • Elspeth Adams (PhD in Engineering Mathematics, Polytechnique Montreal, 2015)

    Thesis title: A Novel Approach to Tightening Semidefinite Relaxations for Certain Combinatorial Problems. This thesis was nominated for the Best Thesis Prize at Polytechnique Montreal, and Dr Adams was a member of the Polytechnique team that placed second at the MOPTA 2014 Competition. She is now a Senior Analyst at Electronic Arts.

  • Bissan Ghaddar (PhD in Management Sciences, University of Waterloo, 2011)

    Thesis title: New Conic Optimization Techniques for Solving Binary Polynomial Programming Problems. Dr Ghaddar was awarded an NSERC CGS for 2009-2011, and Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS) for 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. She was awarded the Fraser Research Prize 2008 for the Best Research Paper by a graduate student in the Department of Management Sciences at the University of Waterloo. She was also a member of the Waterloo team that won the CORS 2008 SIMUL8 Simulation Competition. She is now an Assistant Professor of Management Science at the Ivey Business School.

  • Jose Rafael Avalos Muñoz (PhD in Electrical Engineering, University of Waterloo, 2008)

    Thesis title: Analysis and Application of Optimization Techniques to Power System Security and Electricity Markets. Dr Avalos Muñoz was supported by a CONACYT Scholarship for 2004-2007. After graduating, he was hired as an Associate Regional Transmission Engineer at the California Independent System Operator.

  • Chaomin Luo (PhD in Electrical Engineering, University of Waterloo, 2008)

    Thesis title: Novel Convex Optimization Techniques for VLSI Floorplanning. Dr Luo was awarded an NSERC Doctoral Scholarship for 2003-2005, and an Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) for 2005-2006. He was awarded the SWORD 2007 Best Presentation Award for the talk entitled Large-Scale Fixed-Outline Floorplanning Design Using Convex Optimization Techniques. He is now an Associate Professor at Mississippi State University.

  • Andrew Drake (PhD in Operational Research, University of Southampton, 2009)

    Thesis title: Approaches for Solving Some Scheduling and Routing Problems. Dr Drake was supported by a scholarship from EPSRC. After graduating, he was hired as a Researcher at the University of Southampton.

Masters Students

  • Éloïse Edom (MScA in Industrial Engineering, Polytechnique Montreal, 2020).

    Ms Edom is now a research associate at the Trottier Institute for Energy.

    Dr Barbier is now a Senior Scientist at ExPretio Technologies Inc.

  • Giuseppe Costanzo (MScA in Electrical Engineering, Polytechnique Montreal, 2011)

    Dr Costanzo subsequently completed a PhD at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and is now an R&D Engineer at ETEL S.A.

  • Uwe Truetsch (Diplom Wirtschaftsmathematik, University of Cologne, 2010)

    After graduating, Dr Truetsch completed a PhD at the University of Tilburg, The Netherlands.

    After graduating, Mr Hu was hired as a Business Analyst by Canadian Tire.

  • Sabrina Bernardi (MMath in Computational Mathematics, University of Waterloo, 2010)

    Ms Bernardi was awarded an Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) for 2009-2010. She received the Best Presentation Prize in Computational Mathematics for 2010. After graduating, she was hired as a Business Application Analyst by One-Eighty Corp.

    Ms Adams was awarded an Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) for 2009-2010. After graduating, she completed a PhD at Polytechnique Montreal under my supervision.

    Mr Landry was awarded an NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship for 2007-2009. After graduating, he was hired as an Analyst by Concentra (UK).

    Ms Yen was awarded an Ontario Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (OGSST) for May 2007 - August 2008. After graduating, she was hired as an Analyst by IMS Health.

    Mr Leung was awarded an Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) for 2006-2007. After graduating, he was hired by Ontario Power Generation Inc.

    Ms Jankovits was awarded an Ontario Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (OGSST) for 2005-2006, and an Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) for 2006-2007. After graduating, she was hired as a System Analyst for Deloitte.

    Ms Ghaddar was awarded the Annual Clough Memorial Award 2006 and the El-Gabbani Annual Scholarship 2006, both from the Department of Management Sciences at the University of Waterloo, in recognition of superior scholarship. After graduating, she completed her PhD under my supervision.
